She is the youngest of Diane and Joseph Gibson's four daughters. Growing in Long Island, she was raised in suburban Merrick. She was a piano student alongside the famous pianist Morton Estrin. Gibson began producing and writing her own songs in the early years before appearing in the Billboard Hot 100. Her demo tape was discovered in the hands of a popular radio host when she was only 14. The tape was shared with an executive from Atlantic Records, and her original song "Only in My Dreams" helped her secure the development contract as soon as she could. She started a promotional tour of venues across the United States. She spent the majority of the year 1986-87 writing the songwriting catalog and touring venues. Debbie's mom would accompany her to her gigs. Simultaneously, she continued taking classes at Calhoun High School in Merrick, New York. Then, she graduated as an honors student.
